    The College of American Pathologists (CAP) recently surveyed directors of clinical laboratories nationwide regarding the rate of COVID-19 testing, key barriers to expanding testing, and the impact on pathologists and laboratory professionals.  The survey confirmed that testing is expanding, but over 60% of laboratory directors report difficulties in obtaining critical supplies needed to conduct COVID-19 testing.

  • WVAP member Nadia Naumova, MD appointed as CAC representative

    Nadia Naumova, MD of Charleston Area Medical Center has recently been accepted as the newly appointed contractor advisory committee representative for pathology in the state of West Virginia.  Dr. Naumova is a member of the WVAP board of directors and was nominated for the CAC by the association following the 2019 business meeting.  Recently, her nomination has been accepted by Palmetto, which serves as medicare administrative contractor in WV.  WVAP thanks Dr. Naumova for her willingness to serve in this capacity.

  • WVAP enters into affiliation agreement with College of American Pathologists

    At the annual business meeting, WVAP members approved a motion to join with the College of American Pathologists in an affiliation agreement. The affiliation agreement between CAP and WVAP allows annual sharing of member rosters for the purpose of society business such as notification of meeting, call to action and membership invitation, but may not be used for commercial endeavor, spamming or other unprofessional purpose.

  • ABPath announces two new Focused Practice Designations in Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Microbiology

    The American Board of Pathology (ABPath) announces two new Focused Practice Designations (FPD) in Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Microbiology. The purpose is to recognize and provide credentials to diplomates who have completed the appropriate training. The designations do not replace subspecialty certification for either discipline.   • WVAP Aligns with CAP to Oppose House Bill that May Affect Pathology Practices

    A West Virginia House Bill 2327 was introduced in the state legislature of February 10, and it proposed adding new disclosure requirement for health care providers, hospitals and insurers.  The bill is intended to protect consumers from out-of-network health care “surprise bills” by requiring providers to inform the patient of the estimated cost of non-emergent services, prior to providing such services.  The bill may negatively impact turnaround time of pathology specimens, given the added time it would take one to comply with the required patient notification.
